Stockton, Calif. – Freshman RHP Jake Jenkins tossed eight innings, allowing just four hits, but No. 21 UC Irvine’s starter RHP Andrew Morales scattered seven hits over 8.1 innings for a 1-0 victory over Pacific Sunday at Klein Family Field.
With a short staff available in the bullpen, Jenkins stepped up with a career-best performance, striking out four and walking none. He surrendered just four hits, but the Anteaters pushed across a run in the third on a hit by pitch, a sacrifice, and a seeing-eye RBI single through the left side by CF Dominique Taylor for the lone run of the game.
“Jake did a tremendous job,” head coach Ed Sprague said. “The bullpen was light and he gave us an outstanding effort. It’s a crazy game sometimes; yesterday we have 12 hits and score 14 runs, and today we have seven hits and can’t get a run on the board.”
Morales, now 9-0 on the year, allowed seven hits as he pitched into the ninth. Freshman DH Gio Brusa and senior 2B Tyger Pederson rapped out back-to-back two out singles in the second, but Morales coaxed an infield groundout to end the inning.
